Timm Schleiff: Boatbuilder
I am in the unique position of being able to describe Timm Schleiff because I have known him since 2000 as his Scoutmaster, as a teacher, and as a friend. He was born and raised on his family’s farm on Spring Creek in Renick, West Virginia. His father builds and restores high-quality custom homes and has taught Timm that a top quality product requires that even parts that can’t be seen at the end of the project must be of the highest quality in order to support the visible details of the finished product.
On many occasions, his father has entrusted Timm with providing the finishing details of a house that identify it as a Scheliff house. By working on historic homes and buildings in the area, Timm has developed an appreciation and respect for the architectural details and methods of construction that are rarely seen in modern buildings.
His mother has coordinated his home schooling program in a way that encouraged him to fully pursue his special interests without regard to time constraints. As a result, he dedicates all the time that is necessary to accomplish the goals that he sets for himself. This trait is well illustrated by the quality of his workmanship while building Coquina, his first boat.
Scouting has provided Timm with the opportunity to explore and expand his physical and emotional limits by actively participating in all aspects of his troop’s program. He has backpacked over 600 miles along the Appalachian Mountains, the Izu Hanto peninsula of Japan, and the Snowdonia region of North Wales. In the course of becoming an Eagle Scout, he has demonstrated his leadership skills and his ability to achieve long-term goals by adhering to a realistic schedule. As an Eagle Scout, Timm demonstrates all the qualities of character and integrity that are associated with the rank. He is now an Assistant Scoutmaster and continues to actively serve his Troop and community.
His parents have nurtured the development of his high personal standards of integrity and character. These in turn provide him with a solid foundation for pursuing his life, his career, and his dealings with other people. In everything he does, Timm adheres to the oath that "I will do my best."
